Essay Planning Checklist

Use this checklist before you start writing. Work through it in order, and keep your assignment brief beside you. Tick each item as you complete it, then use your browser’s print option to save a copy.

Before you write

I have read the assignment brief and noted the word count, deadline and submission format.
I can state the essay question in my own words.
I have identified the key terms in the question, including any instruction words such as evaluate, compare or discuss.
I have noted the marking criteria or learning outcomes, where available.

Planning your argument

I have a clear main argument or thesis, in one or two sentences.
I have planned three or four main points that support that argument.
For each point, I have noted evidence, a source to check, and what it shows.
I have considered a counter-argument or a limitation, and how I will address it.

Structure and drafting

My introduction sets out the topic, the argument and the structure.
Each main paragraph starts with a clear point, followed by evidence and explanation.
My conclusion summarises the argument without introducing new evidence.
I have allowed time to revise, check references and proofread before submitting.
