General study guidance only. Always follow your university’s required style and brief.
Cite as you write
Record the full details of every source when you first use it: author, year, title, and publication details. Adding references at the end is much harder and more error-prone than keeping a running list.
In-text citations and reference lists
An in-text citation points the reader to the full entry in your reference list. Check that every in-text citation has a matching entry, and every entry is cited in your work, unless your style guide says otherwise.
Use your own words
Paraphrase ideas in your own words and cite the source. Direct quotations should be short, accurate and clearly marked, with a page reference where your style requires one. Never present someone else’s work as your own.
